After years of Covid restrictions, live in-person events are truly back with a passion. This week, The Fintech Times attends Insurtech Week in London, beelining for Insurtech Insights.
Insurtech Insights is a global ecosystem aiming to connect industry leaders and decision-makers with innovative startups who are challenging the insurance market, in order to create mutual business opportunities and accelerate growth. With attendees from established Insurtech companies to C-level Executives from leading Insurance Carriers, Reinsurers, Investors and innovating Start-up businesses, the event promises to be one of great opportunities.
With a full agenda of panels, keynotes and fireside chats, as well as numerous networking opportunities, we tuned in to a few of the day’s sessions to hear more about what’s going on in insurtech.
Panel: The insurers connecting the gender imbalance
This session was moderated by Renu Ann Joseph, Founder and CEO, Luminant Analytics, and discussed the gender concerns within insurtech and what needs to be done to ensure better representation and diversity. Joseph was joined by Jennifer Linton, Founder and CEO, Fenris; Kate Lyons, Market development and commercial director, RGAX; Sabine VanderLinden, Co-founder and CEO, Alchemy Crew; and Georgina Perry, Product director, Zego.
The insurance and long-term savings industry does a good job of attracting women, but either loses them entirely or fails to promote them. Between entry and senior level, the proportion of female employees falls by 60%, however, we do not have all the data to fully understand why.
This was a fantastic session that highlighted many key points about gender diversity in the workplace. With 61% of the insurance workforce being female, but only 12% of those being c-suite and above, the panellists discussed how the industry could make improvements to support women better.
On this, Perry said: “It’s not about quotas, it’s about having role models. You get confidence by seeing people that look like you succeed.”
With Lyons concluding: “Innovation fails when there’s a lack of diversity.”
Fireside Chat: Stripe and Cuvva – The state of digital experience in insurance
George Bozovic, Insurance leader, Deloitte, sat down with Freddy Macnamara, Founder and CEO, Cuvva and Max Roberts, UK and MEA Country Manager, Stripe, to discuss the state of digital experiences in insurance and how digitalisation is impacting customer experiences and creating new opportunities for insurance providers.
On this, Macnamara said: “The thing about consumer insurance is that it’s actually been digitised since the advent of the internet.”
Panel: New ways of working, new solutions: how revolutionising insurance will futureproof the gig economy
This conversation was all about the gig economy and how insurance plays a part in the sector, and how it can adapt to suit the needs of gig economy workers.
Moderated by Karl Grey, Director, Head of insurance, EMEA, Uber, the panel was made up of Russell Corbould-Warren, Chief Underwriting Officer, Collective Benefits and Garrett Olsen, Head of Insurance and Risk Management, Wolt, who shared some interesting insights on the topic.
Grey said: “Traditional insurers definitely have the appetite, there’s not a big insurer out there that doesn’t have a strong focus on the gig economy or digitisation”
